This article describes how to use WinSCP to transfer files via SFTP. Please note that this article is provided as a reference only and that we do not provide any support for the application. If you need support in using WinSCP please visit: http://winscp.net/forum/index.php

WinSCP is a free windows based download and can be found at: http://winscp.net/forum/index.php

After installation and launching the program you are presented with the WinSCP Login window.

You will need to know:

  1. The Host name. This is the FQDN (Fully Qualified Domain Name) of the server you are accessing. Ex. sftp.mydomain.com
  2. Your User name. If you do not know your user name, please contact the admin for the sftp server.
  3. Your Password. If you do not know your password, please contact the admin for the sftp server.

Once you have entered in this information for the session all you need to do is click "Login". If this is the first time you have connected to this particular sftp server, you will be prompted to accept the ID of the server. If you click "No", you will not be able to proceed. Click "Yes" if you want to continue.

This will begin the login process. Once the login process has finished the transfer window will appear.

The transfer window basically consists of two parts. The left side shows your own computer directory structure and the right side shows the files and folders on the sftp server. To transfer a file simple drag-and-drop from one side to the other.
